Virginia Lucille "Polly"
Wells
Aug 19, 1941 — Jun 16, 2026
Virginia Lucille “Polly” Wells, 84, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, at Linda Manor in Leeds, Massachusetts, with her youngest son by her side.
Born on August 19, 1941, in Cummington, Massachusetts to James and Marion Martin, Polly was one of 7 siblings. Polly met the love of her life, Richard Wells, in her hometown. They married young and built a life rooted in family, hard work, and devotion to one another. Richard, her beloved husband and partner in life, preceded her in death on October 14, 2021.
Together, Polly and Richard raised three boys and operated their family farm on Depot Road in Hatfield, Massachusetts. Polly was a strong woman, a dedicated farmer’s wife, and a loving mother who helped make both the farm and family flourish. Life on the farm revolved around livestock and crops, and everyone worked together to support the family and the community.
Beyond her dedication to family and farm life, Polly found joy in the simple beauty of the world around her. She loved taking long drives through the countryside, appreciating the changing seasons and the rural landscapes she called home. An avid birder, she possessed a remarkable gift for identifying birds by their songs and calls. Despite being deaf in one ear, she could often recognize a bird long before anyone else could spot it.
Polly was also a woman of quiet strength and resilience. As a child, she overcame polio. As a mother of three boys on a farm, she had her share of injuries and hospital visits to deal with. While raising her boys, she survived cancer. She never sought attention or sympathy for the challenges she endured, instead meeting them with grace, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to her family.
Polly took great pride in her family and found her greatest joy in watching it grow through the generations. She is survived by her sons, Barry, Brian (Sherrene), and Bruce (Deborah); her grandchildren, Cameron (Emily), Patrick, Jordan, and Tania; and her great-granddaughter, Elizabeth, whom she adored. Polly also leaves three brothers, along with innumerable nieces, nephews, loving in-laws, and dear friends. She lost her daughter-in-law, Audrey Wells, and her brother, Larry Martin, earlier this year. She was previously predeceased by her brother Tim Martin and sister Patsy Childs.
Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Linda Manor, and of Pioneer Valley Hospice, for the kindness, compassion, and exceptional care they provided during her years there.
Though she will be deeply missed, Polly’s legacy lives on in the family she loved, the values she instilled, and the many memories she leaves behind.
May she rest in peace.
