Sylvia May Bernier passed away unexpectedly on March 12, 2023, of a heart attack at Hartford Hospital.
She was born on May 26, 1935, in Northampton, and lived here all her life. She was the daughter of Waldemar and Althea (Moore) Josephson.
Sylvia attended Smith Vocational High School until she was married in 1953. She was a stay at Mom until her children were in school, and then worked as a Dining Room Coordinator at Smith College.
She was the eldest of four children, and her family meant everything to her. Sylvia was a huge country music fan, enjoyed western movies, and crocheting blankets for the whole family.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James R. Bernier, Jr., her sister Ruth Beaulieu, and her son Jay Bernier.
She is survived by her children, James R. Bernier III and his wife Beverly of Easthampton, David E. Bernier and Tammy S. Bernier of Florence, her grandchildren Jason R. Bernier and his wife Wendy of Exeter, Rhode Island, Matthew A. Bernier of Easthampton, her great grandson Brandon M. Bernier of Exeter, Rhode Island, her sister Nancy Rubeck of Easthampton, and her brother Gary Josephson of California, as well as several nieces and nephews.
There will be a private gathering at the convenience of the family.
