WILLIAMSBURG-Stephen M. Smith, 82, of Petticoat Lane passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at Cooley Dickinson Hospital after a brief illness. Stephen was born in Northampton, a son of the late Arthur B. & Mary (Burke) Smith. He grew up in Northampton and was educated in local schools. Steven was a US Army veteran, serving with the 540th Transportation Co. in Vietnam. He received the Vietnam Service. He was Honorably discharged and returned home to raise his family. He married Sylvia I. Marney and they settled in Williamsburg to raise their family. Steve worked for the USPS as a clerk in both the Northampton and Florence Post Offices for many years and then Punderson Oil before finally retiring. Steve loved tinkering and always had a project going on around the house or helping neighbors and friends. He enjoyed grilling for the family at get togethers. He loved watching the Red Sox and Patriots in his spare time. He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur & Mary Smith. His siblings; Richard Smith, Arthur Smith and Joan Smith and brother-in-law, Fran Godin. Stephen leaves his wife of 57 years, Sylvia I. (Marney) Smith. His children; Matthew J. Smith and his wife Jody of North Providence, R.I., Elizabeth A. “Liz” Fortier and her husband Mark of Conway and, Melissa J. Smith of Northampton. His grandchildren; Ryan and his fiancé Abbi, Jack, Morgan and fiancée Luis and Alyssa and her husband Ryan and great grandchildren; Harper Bow, Cameron and Ryland. His sister, Eleanor Godin of Chicopee and many nieces’ nephews and great nieces and nephews. He also leaves his sister-in-laws; Anne Smith, Patricia Smith, Pauline (Marney) Bowe and her husband John Bowe and Rosemary Collins and her late husband Sonny Collins.
