Obituary

SOUTH DEERFIELD-Roger E. Baker, 81, passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, in South Deerfield after a long illness. He was born in Montague, MA., a son of the late Robert & Laura (Cook) Baker. He was educated in local schools, graduating from the Auto Body program at Smith Vocational High School in Northampton. He enlisted in the US Army serving with the 1st Artillery Battery in the 5th Battalion from 1965 to 1967. After returning home, he began work as an autobody technician with Rubin Auto Body in Turners Falls and then with the Saab/Volvo Garage in South Deerfield. Roger decided to take a position at Texon in Holyoke where he worked for many years until he started as a mechanic for the Town of South Deerfield, finally retiring in 2010. Roger enjoyed his many walks around town chatting with many friends along the way. He had great pleasure riding in his antique REO with his family and friends. Roger had a great knowledge of motors and anything mechanical so many people would come to him for any help he could provide. He loved his family and enjoyed anytime he spent with them, laughing and joking as that was his kind of humor. Roger leaves his beloved wife of 60 years, Joan (Batrano) Baker. His two sons; Ronald Baker and his wife Kristen Baker of South Deerfield, Richard Baker and his wife Kellie Baker of Keene, NH. His daughter, Terry Raymond and her husband Todd Raymond of Bernardston. His grandchildren; Amy Morin, Tyler Raymond, Sam Tillona, Ben Tillona, Christian Tillona & Gabrielle Fisk along with his great grandchildren; Faith Morin, Lilah Morin, & Finn Nagiec-Fisk and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers; Donald, Russell and Harold Baker.
