Richard “Dick” Barrett passed away on June 21, 2024 at the age of 86 in Florence. Barbara “Bobbie” (Cumm) Barrett passed away on February 3, 2021 at the age of 84 in Florence.
Richard was born in Northampton on June 13, 1938. His parents were Edward F. Barrett and Shirley L. (Robbins) Barrett of Northampton. His mother passed away when he young and he was raised by his father’s siblings, Anna, Thomas, and Catherine Barrett of Florence. A graduate of St Michael’s Catholic school in Northampton, Dick was briefly enrolled at Columbia University before serving in the United States Navy. Dick married his wife, Barbara Mae Cumm of Williamsburg, on December 2, 1961. He worked for Tubed Products for many years as a Scheduler before retiring. Richard was predeceased by his two brothers, Edward of Port Orange Florida, and James of Northampton.
Barbara was born on November 14, 1936. Her parents were William L. Cumm and Ursula E (Morin) Cumm of Williamsburg. She was a graduate of Williamsburg High School. She worked for Pro Brush in Florence before being a homemaker for many years. Later she worked at Everybody’s Market, Yankee Hill Machine, and finally Brooks drug store, all of Florence. She was predeceased by a sister, Janice Walsh of Florence and survived by a sister, Joann Pinard of Florence.
Richard and Barbara were avid campers in their retirement, spending many a day at Seven Maples campground in New Hampshire. Dick was an avid reader and enjoyed doing the crossword puzzles in the newspaper daily and he loved to toss horseshoes with his close friend, Whitey. Barbara loved the Red Sox and NASCAR. Carl Yazstremski and Jeff Gordon were her favorites. Family was very important to Dick and Barbara and many weekends were filled with family gatherings at their home in Florence.
Richard and Barbara are survived by their four children. Suzanne Whitman of Florence, Michael Barrett of Belchertown, Patricia Laureano of Florence, and Donald Barrett of South Carolina along with nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Services for Barbara were held previously. Services for Richard will be on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of the Annunciation Church in Florence. Burial to follow at St Mary’s Cemetery in Northampton.
