Mary E. Benoit, 81 of Northampton, a longtime teacher, educator and lifelong resident of the city passed away peacefully on Tuesday at Linda Manor with her family at her side. Mary was born in Northampton, a daughter of the late Edward H. and Alice (Fitzgerald) Benoit. Mary was educated in local schools, graduating from Northampton High School. She furthered her education by attending and graduating from Elms College with her bachelor’s degree in education. Mary taught English at JFK Middle School in Northampton for 34 years before retiring. Mary was a devout catholic and lifelong member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Family here in Northampton, and longtime communicant of the former St. Mary’s Church in the city. She was a member and supporter of the Sisters of St. Joseph, SSJ with the Diocese of Western Massachusetts. She taught CCD with the parish, was a choir and parish council member. Mary loved traveling and visited Ireland, Scotland, and England. She enjoyed many hobbies including reading, theatre and book club. Mary leaves her devoted brother and his wife, John and Paula Benoit of Northampton. A nephew, James Lastowski and his wife Emileigh their children Mason and TJ, and her dear friends; Sara & Gerald Fredette and Christine Mulcahy. Family and friends are invited to gather to remember Mary on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 10:00 A.M. directly at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, King St., Northampton to celebrate the Liturgy of Christian burial. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Northampton. The family would like to especially thank the staff at Linda Manor for their exceptional and compassionate care, and Linda Manor for providing Mary a home and friends that she loved.
