Marie Ann Bates

NORTHAMPTON-With deep sadness we announce that Marie Ann Bates, 65, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday June 1, 2025. Born in Northampton on September 8, 1959, she was the daughter of Carol (Williams) and Norman Gougeon, both deceased.
Marie graduated from Northampton High School. Out of high school, Marie attended Holyoke Community College and graduated with an associate’s degree in medical assisting. A few years later, she continued her education at Greenfield Community College graduating as a Registered Nurse. She was very proud of her long career as a nurse where she worked in various hospitals and facilities. Marie loved being at the beach and traveled to the ocean often. She was a skilled golfer and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Marie’s greatest joy in life was being a mom and ‘grammie’. She is survived by her children Kyle (Gina) Bates of Northampton, MA, Alyssa Prucnal (Raymond Cheria) of Southampton, MA, Tyler Bates of Williamsburg, MA, their father Thomas Bates of Williamsburg, MA and her three grandchildren Braelyn, Connor and Jacob. Marie also leaves behind her brothers Charles (Susan) Gougeon of Franklin, TN, John (Lorrie) Gougeon of Westhampton, MA and Eric (Rhonda) Gougeon of Chesterfield, MA as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her parents, she is pre-deceased by her brother, Edward Gougeon.
Marie’s beautiful smile and witty sense of humor will be greatly missed. Instead of a funeral service, the family will hold a celebration of life for Marie filled with love, laughter and memories on October 4th, 2025 at the Northampton Country Club, 135 Main Street, Leeds MA from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Marie’s name can be made to the Cancer Center at Cooley Dickinson or Cooley Dickinson VNA and Hospice. Donations can be sent to Cooley Dickinson Development Office, P.O. Box 329, Northampton, MA 01061-0329.
