PELHAM - On March 1, 2026, we said goodbye to Linda in Osterville, a place she loved. She passed peacefully, surrounded by love.

Linda was born in Boston on July 15, 1951, to Dorothy and Robert Garland and grew up in Stow. From an early age, she was curious, determined, and “wicked smaat”.

Long before computers felt ordinary to most people, they made perfect sense to Linda. She earned her undergraduate degree in Computer Science from UMass Amherst and Boston University and later completed her master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania. She built a long and diverse career with computers at Digital Equipment Corporation, IBM, LSU, Penn, UMass, and Smith College. At Smith, she played a key role in introducing and supporting learning management systems, working closely with faculty across campus. She had a natural gift for technology and built a career developing innovative solutions and solving problems. Linda also traveled extensively with her husband, Jack, and particularly enjoyed co-leading UMass student trips to Europe.

Linda and Jack shared 49 years of marriage — years filled with love, travel, and shared passions for family, and love of landscapes. They explored Europe together, with family and alongside UMass students, and created a lifetime of memories. In recent years, their happiest days were often the simplest ones: long walks on Cape Cod with their beloved poodles.

For more than 20 years, Linda lived with breast cancer and lymphoma. She faced both with remarkable strength and resolve, rarely complaining and never letting illness define her. She was deeply grateful for the compassionate care she received. Even when her health became more fragile with encephalitis, her spirit never did.

Linda’s greatest pride and joy was her family. She leaves behind her beloved Jack; her three sons, Ryan, Jeffrey, and Sean; their spouses, Brigid, Katriina, and Caitlin; and her precious grandchildren, Natalie, Quentin, Dorothy, Casey, Ollie, Edvin, and Alvar. She delighted in their every visit. Being “Gamma” was one of the great joys of her life.

She loved sewing and knitting — creating beautiful, practical things for her family. She cheered faithfully for all the Boston sports teams. She often had a novel nearby. She was thoughtful and observant, strong but gentle, and she loved deeply without needing to make a show of it.

We will miss her steady presence, her quiet humor, her sarcasm, and the comfort of simply having her there. Our lives are better because of her, and her love will remain with us always.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 5, 2026 from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at AHEARN FUNERAL HOME, 783 Bridge Rd., Northampton. 

Relatives and friends are invited to gather directly at Wildwood Cemetery, 70 Strong St., Amherst on Friday at 11:00 A.M. for a Green Burial service for Linda. (Please arrive by 10:45 a.m.)
