Kathleen T. Sherman passed away Sunday, October 16, 2022 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 24, 1943 in Northampton, MA to the late George and Julia (Murphy) Jasmin. She married the love of her life; Kenny Sherman and they built a life together throughout their 59 years of marriage. They bought the family home in 1969 in Florence, MA and lovingly raised their family there.
Kathy was a 1961 graduate of St. Michael’s High School. After working as a telephone operator, she began working along with Kenny at the Northampton State Hospital. In fall of 1979, she decided to pursue her passion and become a cosmetologist. She entered the post-graduate program at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School and completed the program, while working full time, and obtained her cosmetology license. After working at Gemini Hair Salon for several years, she opened her own salon, Leather and Lace, with business partner, Sharyne Benedisuk. Kathy was beloved by her loyal customers and many became close friends. She officially retired in September of 2020 at the insistence of her family.
Kathy was a proud member of: the Florence Business Association, Northampton St. Patrick’s Association, and a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church in Northampton. She volunteered for several years at the Hospice Shop and donated her time in her community.
She had a vast variety of hobbies, ranging from being a member of a motorcycle club and bowling league to quilting, sewing, and crocheting. Kathy followed in her father’s footsteps with her love of cooking and hosting family dinners. She celebrated Halloween by creating outlandish costumes and handing out the full-size candy bars. Not an April Fool’s Day went by without someone in the family falling victim to one of her pranks. Kathy loved to travel and was lucky enough to return to her mother’s home country, Ireland, three times. She took pleasure in the many bus trips and family vacations throughout her life. Kathy was fortunate enough to take a final trip to the Cape this summer and put her toes in the water. She was an avid reader and had a love for any psychological fiction book. Kathy was a fierce competitor in a game of backgammon with her best friend, Maureen Lee, yelling “Acey Deucey” while drinking their hot toddies. Another favorite pastime was attending BINGO with her friend, Thelma, or her grandchildren. No one can forget the 90’s when Kathy and Maureen filled in for co-ed softball when the Leather and Lace team was short on players. There are videos to prove the hilarious tomahawk chops and the victorious run to first base. Kathy and Kenny attended countless games and activities of their beloved grandchildren. There was no doubt, Nana was the loudest and proudest voice to be heard.
It goes without saying, she was larger than life. She loved her family and friends and became a second mom to many and a “Nana” to even more. Her beautiful soul shined with everything she did. Throughout her short time with us, Kathy touched so many lives with her generosity. Whether it was a haircut in the home, a seat at the holiday table, or a baked treat… Nana spread her love to all around her.
Kathy leaves behind her loving husband, Richard (Kenny) Sherman. Their three children: Julie Brittain (David Hewes), Randy Sherman (Tara), and Ronald Sherman. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren who she was a vital part in raising: Zachary, Jacob, and Allyson Brittain; Ella and Jack Sherman. She was also Nana to Michael, Nicole, Nicholas, Natasha, and several great-grandchildren. Brother William (Sue) Jasmin of Texas. Adored cousins, nieces, and nephews near and far.
In addition to her parents, Kathy was predeceased by her sister MaryAnn Warnock and brother Dennis Jasmin.
