SOUTH DEERFIELD-Joyce A. (Sliwa) Makowski, 91, of Conway Road passed away peacefully on Monday Morning at Cooley Dickinson Hospital after a brief illness. Joyce was born in Northfield, a daughter to Joseph and Helen (Smolen) Sliwa. She married Edward Makowski on April 26, 1958 at St. Patrick’s Church in Northfield. They enjoyed 55 years of love, memories and wonderful times until his passing on September 15, 2013. Joyce was a former bank executive throughout her 38-year career. She worked her way up to Assistant Vice President and Manager of the Third National Bank. Joyce belonged to several professional groups during her time at the bank, including the Turners Falls Women’s Club, Director of Pioneer Valley Associations of Northampton, Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and receiving an award for her 7 years of active service. She was a registered Notary Public with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She continued her education throughout her career in management and banking. Joyce was a devoted communicant of Holy Family Church in South Deerfield. She is survived by her nieces, Jane Jankowski, Joyce Sadoski, and her dear niece and godchild, Tina (Jankowski) James and several other nieces and nephews. Her nieces and nephew, Nancy Sadoski, Joyce Sadoski and Roger Sadoski managed and cared for her, so she was able to abide and live independently in her own home. The family invites you to join them on Friday, April 25, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. at Holy Family Church, Sugarloaf St., South Deerfield to celebrate the Liturgy of Christian burial for Joyce. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Northfield. There are no calling hours. The family asks that if one wishes, donations in Joyce’s memory be made to a local charity.
