Obituary

FLORENCE -Joseph Arthur Binner, beloved father, engineer, entrepreneur, and a man of quiet strength and enduring character, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 6, 2026, at the age of 90 in Florence, Massachusetts, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Hungary, Art grew up during a time when freedom was uncertain and the future unclear. As a young man in the 1950s, he made the courageous decision to leave his homeland and escape communist rule. With determination and hope for a better future, he immigrated to Canada while still in college, beginning a new chapter of life in a new country. There, he continued his studies and pursued his calling as a mechanical engineer. Learning English and adapting to a new culture were challenges he met with persistence and humility.

Upon graduating, he began his technical career in eastern Canada and soon after met Raymonde, his first wife and mother of his children, Carl and Christina. In 1966, seeking greater opportunity and independence, he moved his family to the United States. With vision, ingenuity, and tireless work, he founded Deerfield Polyurethane, a successful plastics company. Through his innovation and entrepreneurial spirit, the materials his company produced became part of many products used worldwide. His work provided not only for his family but also reflected his belief that determination and integrity could build something lasting.

After decades of hard work, he retired at the age of 55, having accomplished what many only dream of. Yet those who knew him understood that his greatest qualities were found in the character he lived by every day.

He was intelligent, disciplined, and determined; qualities that helped him overcome tremendous challenges and build a remarkable life. At times, that determination showed up as a bit of stubbornness, a trait his family knew well and often smiled about. Beneath it all was a steady, dependable presence and a deep commitment to the people he loved.

Throughout his life, he embraced many passions beyond his professional work. During his high school and college years, he was an avid swimmer and water polo player. Later in life he developed a love for golf and tennis, and especially skiing, which brought both challenge and enjoyment for himself and his family. He also found great satisfaction in gardening and landscaping, taking pride in creating beautiful outdoor spaces. Travel was another great joy, and he had the opportunity to explore many parts of the world, experiencing new cultures and places along the way.

In the later chapter of his life, when his beloved second wife, Patricia, developed Alzheimer’s disease, he devoted himself fully to her care. With patience, loyalty, and unwavering devotion, he stood faithfully by her side throughout her illness, embodying the deepest meaning of commitment and love.

Woven throughout his life was a dry sense of humor that those closest to him came to know and cherish. Even in his final days, that subtle wit remained, reminding everyone around him of the sharp mind and spirited personality that had always been part of who he was.

He was preceded in death by his beloved second wife, Patricia, and by his brother, Pubi Binner. He is survived by his children, Carl Binner and his wife Deborah Day, Christina Binner Russell and her husband Jeff Russell; his first wife, Raymonde Binner; his stepchildren, Bambi Rawlings, Heath Rawlings, and Chris Rawlings; step-grandchild, Jenna Rawlings and sister in law, Agnes Binner.

As we reflect on his remarkable 90 years, we trust that his journey continues beyond this life, held in the grace of something greater and reunited with those he loved who have gone before him.

His life reminds us that courage, perseverance, and determination can shape not only a successful life, but a meaningful one. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A graveside service will b e held at Mill River Cemetery in South Deerfield.
