Doctor Jean Louis Macary, age 91, died December 3, 2022, after a brief battle with cancer. Born and raised in Paris, France, his education culminated in 1972 with a doctorate from the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1959, he married the love of his life, Monique Germaine Croise, and they began their life together in France. In 1968, they relocated with their three children, Troubidou (their tuxedo cat), and a Fiat 1500, to the U.S. where Jean was invited to teach at Princeton University, allowing the opportunity for him to work on his 18th century research. A few years later, residing in New York, NY, he taught at Fordham University, during which time he authored several books. Jean also taught French Literature, Greek, and Latin at the Lycee Francais in New York. Jean was the President of the “Societe des Professeurs Francais and Francophones d’ Amerique” (SPFFA), where he organized an international congress of scholars and was responsible for its publication called “Francographies”. Finally retiring at 71, they moved to Pawley’s Island, SC to enjoy a milder climate, the beach, and tennis, where Jean continued his passion for teaching at Coastal Carolina University.
An avid tennis player well into his seventh decade, Jean took great joy in winning matches with his adult children and other younger players. As an accomplished pianist, he relished classical music, particularly Mozart as well as Wagner. Jean savored great literature, good wine, and lively conversation. Jean was a Chevalier du Tastevin. At the many memorable Macary gatherings with family and friends one would discover exceptional vintages and enjoy fellowship and delicious food (lovingly prepared by his skillful wife, Monique).
Jean was predeceased by his father, Marcel Macary, architect for the French senate and curator of the Palais du Luxembourg, and his mother Simone Macary, and his older brother Claude Macary. Jean is survived by his wife, Monique Germaine Macary and their three children: Philippe Jean Macary of Northampton, MA, and his wife Hope; Bertrand Jean Macary of Hyattsville, MD, and his life partner Lalita; and Catherine Chantal Dominique Macary-Carney of Ventura, CA. Jean is also survived by his brother, Michel Macary and his wife, Fancoise Macary of Paris, France.
Jean leaves his beloved grandchildren to whom he gifted a rich legacy of art and music appreciation, and a discernment for fine wine: Chloe Monique-Theresa Macary-Carney, Sophie Opal Claire Macary, Pierre Jean Macary, and Marley Christopher Macary-Kollins; and his step grandchildren Maxwell Clark Brown, Adam Bateman Brown, and one step great-granddaughter, Petra Luna Brown. Jean also leaves a dear family friend who was like another son to him, Michel Beckerich of New York, NY, and his companion, Carlitta.
