Chicopee- Gracemary L. Smith, 76, of Chicopee and formerly of Northampton, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, January 31, 2025. Gracemary was born in Northampton on March 31, 1948, the daughter of the late John F. and Helen A. (Ahearn) Corrigan. She was raised in Northampton and attended local schools. Gracemary spent many years working as a case manager with Incentive Community Enterprises (ICE). She began her career at the former Northampton State Hospital. Later, she was one of the first people to staff Incentive Community Enterprises, a vocational rehabilitation program located at the Northampton State Hospital. ICE eventually moved into the community, and Gracemary continued working there until 1998, when illness forced her to retire. Gracemary was a strong advocate for those in need. She served on the Northampton Committee on Handicap Affairs for several years. Gracemary had a love of music and singing. She sang with her musician husband, Kevin (McGowan) Smith in the local and Boston area throughout the years. While living in Northampton, Gracemary was an active member of the former Blessed Sacrament Church, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Blessed Virgin Sodality. Since moving to Chicopee, she has been a parishioner at St. Anne’s Church. Gracemary is survived by her loving and devoted daughter Helen Anne Ahern and her partner Lawrence Jones of Chicopee. Besides her parents, Gracemary was predeceased by her husband Kevin H. Smith and her beloved son Shaun Thomas Cote, who died in 2015. Shaun will be remembered along with his mother at services this week. Gracemary’s daughter would like to thank the Holyoke VNA/Hospice and Gracemary’s devoted CNA Cassandra Croston for the wonderful care they provided to Gracemary.
