Georgina Louise Moroney

June 16, 2023 — June 30, 2023

FLORENCE-Georgina Louise Moroney, former Professor Emeritus University of Massachusetts, Amherst, former Pastoral Minister, Annunciation Parish, Florence, died peacefully on June 30, 2023 having lived a full, giving, and loving life. Her life is celebrated by her family and a large community of friends who will miss her spirituality, her thoughtfulness, and compassion for others. She was a woman of strength and eternal optimism, a leader, and a friend to all people. She was born in Boston. Formerly a native of Cambridge, she was predeceased by her parents, James and Georgina Moroney, her brother James, and sister-in-law Jean. She received her A.B. Degree from the College of St. Elizabeth in N.J., studied at Fordham U. and at Boston College, and received a master’s degree and a Doctorate from the University of Massachusetts. Georgina was an artist who worked in oils and acrylics, producing many seascapes and landscapes. In 1977 she had several works accepted in the International Modern Art competition in Monte Carlo, Monaco, and was invited to have her work become part of the Princess Grace Museum of Monaco collection. After 26 years of teaching at the University, Dr. Moroney became Pastoral Minister at Our Lady of the Annunciation Parish in Florence where, in 1998, she established the Office for Pastoral Concerns. Her ministry reached people from many towns in western Massachusetts and northern Connecticut through her outreach in bereavement and divorce, counseling, grief therapy, and pastoral counseling. Scripture and contemplation were the frequent themes of programs she presented. Many will remember her commitment to the ill and homebound, and her devotion to Our Lord in the Eucharist. Georgina was a Benedictine Oblate, a member of the Mt. St. Benedict Monastery in Erie, Pennsylvania. She leaves her sister, Irene St. John of Florence, seven nieces: Jeannette Doyle of Mashpee, Theresa Hadley of Mattapoisett, Marie Robicheau of Barrington, NH, Christine Marquis of Plymouth, Elise Pazienza of Dedham, Susan St. John-Rogers of North Easton, Christine St. John of Rosendale, NY, and Peter St. John of Florence. She also leaves four grandnieces and 8 grandnephews. Sometime ago Georgina wrote the following, it was her intention that it be included here: “The only appropriate beginning for this personal statement is for me to thank God for the parents he gave me, Jim and Georgina, who led me to the Eucharist at the Table where all hunger is satisfied; for all those in my life who taught me how to set the Table; and who now serve as maître d’ at the Great Banquet.”. FRIENDS AND FAMILY WILL GATHER TO REMEMBER GEORGINA AT VISITATION ON WEDNESDAY JULY 5, 2023 FROM 6:00 TO 8:00 P.M. AT AHEARN FUNERAL HOME, NORTHAMPTON. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE THURSDAY, JULY 6, 2023 FROM AHEARN FUNERAL HOME AT 10:00 A.M. WITH A LITURGY OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL AT 11:00 A.M. AT ANNUNCIATION CHAPEL, BEACON ST., FLORENCE. Burial will be at a later date at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, So. Weymouth, Massachusetts. Georgina requested that in lieu of flowers memorial gifts be made to the Benedictine Sisters of Erie, PA, 6101 East Lake Road, Erie, PA 16522 (814-899-0614).
