Francis "Frank" Mangan

January 23, 1958 — August 12, 2024

Francis X. Mangan, 66 of Shutesbury, and the devoted husband of Martha Favre, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Francis or Frank as family and friends knew him as, was born in Salem, MA., a son of the late John and Mary (Dooley) Mangan. Frank grew up in Beverly, MA. and was a member of the Track Team and a graduate of Beverly High School. He received a BA from Salem State University, his BS, MS and PhD in Agriculture from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
He served as Extension Professor with the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts and specialized in Ethnic crops, Urban agriculture, Vegetable marketing and Vegetable production. A major focus of his work was to promote growing and marketing vegetables and herbs popular among immigrant communities in Massachusetts. Frank worked successfully with a wide range of individuals and organizations to further this work, both here and internationally, and was skilled at assessing community needs, building relationships at all levels, and working collaboratively for the greater good. He was a member of the International Society for Tropical Horticulture, Friends of the Shutesbury Library and the Circolo Italiano in Amherst, celebrating Italian culture. He enjoyed studying and learning numerous languages and playing and watching basketball with his friends. He also enjoyed planting and working in his home vegetable garden and sharing the produce with friends.
Frank will be greatly missed by his wife Martha Favre, of Shutesbury, his daughter Fiona Trombley (Josh) of Auburn, MA. and his beloved grandsons, Isaac and Oscar. His siblings; Jack Mangan (Nina) of Westford, Jean Geiwitz (Fraser) of Medway, MA., Anne Gallo (Tom) of Hermitage, TN., Elizabeth Brooks (Keith)of Boardman, OH., Ellen Mangan of Portland, ME. And Patricia Harries (Rhod) of Montreal, Canada as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Tsongalis, Dr. Starr and Dr. Zesiger and the staff at Hospice of the Fisher Home for the wonderful care Frank received from them all. Donations in Frank’s name can be made to Hospice of the Fisher House in Amherst. A CELEBRATION OF LIFE WILL BE HELD FOR FRANK ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15 AT 3:00PM IN THE CAMPUS CENTER- MARRIOTT CENTER (11TH FLOOR) WITH PARKING AVAILABLE IN THE CAMPUS CENTER PARKING GARAGE (2ND FLOOR).
