Emma Jane (Van Winkle) Carnes

LEEDS-Emma Jane (Van Winkle) Carnes, 87 of Audubon Road passed peacefully on Sunday afternoon surrounded by her loving family. Emma was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, a daughter of the late Nelson and Emma (Lake) Van Winkle. She was raised in New Jersey and attended schools there. Furthering her education, she received a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master of Art in Teaching. Emma taught in Tulsa, OK for a year before coming back East and teaching at Granby Public Schools, Smith College Day School and finally the Northampton Public Schools in both the elementary and secondary sector, for many years before retiring. Emma married Richard Carnes and they settled in Leeds many years ago. She enjoyed traveling, teaching, reading, gardening and quilting. She leaves her beloved husband Richard Carnes and her devoted daughters; Deborah Carnes Reilly of Worthington and Vanessa Leigh Ames of Montague. Her grandchildren; Sean Reilly, Lara Terounzo and Tanner Ames and two great grandchildren, Killian and Lyanna Terounzo. At Emma’s request all services will be private, and interment of her ashes will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Florence. An announcement of a public “Celebration of Life” gathering will be forth coming soon.
