David passed away on July 21, 2023, from complications of a stroke. Dave was born in Northampton MA on August 8th, 1947, to Dorothy Rogers Mathers and John Mathers Jr. Dave graduated from Williamsburg High School, class of 1965. After high school Dave joined the Army and served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968. On returning home to Williamsburg, he set off on a career as an auto mechanic. He eventually opened his business, Dave’s Auto, in a garage on Main Street in Williamsburg.
In 1985 Dave went to work at National Grid in Northampton and remained there until his retirement in 2017.
Dave was very active in Williamsburg’s Town Government. He served on the Board of Appeals and then went on to serve as a member of the Board of Selectmen until his passing.
Dave was also very active in the American Legion Post 236 in Haydenville MA.
Snowmobiling was also a big part of Dave’s life. He loved going to Van Buren Maine and riding the trails in Maine and Canada with good friend Cliff Clark. He also repaired many friends snow mobiles.
Dave married Liddy Baker on December 6, 1986. He became the best stepdad to Liddy’s four children. What a brave man. He couldn’t have done a better job being there for them, and in return they loved him.
Dave and Liddy spent many hours traveling in their motor home. They both enjoyed Nascar and traveled to many races. New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, New York, and North Carolina were favorite destinations.
Dave was predeceased by his mother and father. He is survived by his brother John Mathers, his wife Liddy and her four children, Amy Rocasah of South Deerfield, Frederick Baker of Williamsburg, Douglas Baker of South Hadley, and Clay Baker of Concord, North Carolina. He also leaves 7 step grandchildren, Shelby Rudek, Mitchell Rocasah, Sarah Price, Stephanie Burrage, Jon Baker and Patrick and Nicholas Baker.
Liddy would like to express her gratitude to the ambulances and first responders for their compassionate care of David. Also, for all the concern from friends to his family.
There will be a get together at the American Legion, Post 236 on Bridge Street in Haydenville, MA on Sunday, August 27th from 1:00 to 4:00 in the Afternoon. Please come and share food and stories and celebrate Dave’s well lived life. Dave was a kind and gentle man and will be greatly missed.
