Arlene May (Sabo) Harry, known to friends and family as Nana, 100, a lifelong resident of Goshen, Massachusetts, died on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, just 17 days before her 101st birthday.

Arlene was born at Cooley Dickinson Hospital on August 7, 1925, the 4th child of of Michael Sabo and Ruth Woodbury Sabo. Raised on a farm in Goshen, she attended Goshen Elementary School and graduated valedictorian of Williamsburg High School class of 1943 before training as a licensed practical nurse at Cooley Dickenson Hospital.

Arlene worked as an LPN in the intensive care unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital after her oldest children were in high school. She helped start the Goshen Ambulance service as a nurse and then trained to be an EMT once it was invented. She also worked as a nanny and devoted much of her life to caring for others.

Of all the roles Arlene held, however, perhaps none was more important to her—or more fondly remembered by the community—than that of neighborhood mom. Her home in the center of Goshen was a gathering place for local children, who knew they would be welcomed, watched over and cared for. There were often enough children gathered there to make two full baseball teams. Generations of Goshen children grew up knowing that Arlene was looking out for them.

Arlene met Master Sergeant Richard H Harry in 1943 and they were married on Oct 5, 1946. They shared 49 years of marriage and raised four sons. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother whose family remained at the center of her life.

Arlene’s commitment to Goshen extended far beyond her own home. She served on the building committees for both Hampshire Regional High School and New Hingham Regional Elementary School, as well as on the Goshen Historical Commission and the School Committee. She helped organize Goshen’s annual flower show for many years and contributed generously to the civic and community life of the town.

Her Christian faith was central to her life. Arlene was a deaconess of the Goshen Congregational Church, sang in the choir and assisted with Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, youth activities and Pilgrim Fellowship. She also served at the Good Tidings Bible Conference in Cornwallville, New York.

Arlene is survived by her sons, Richard H and his wife Barbara of Pittsfield, Michael W and his wife Diana of Salmon, Idaho, John L and his wife Susan of Goshen and Matthew W and his wife Nancy of Goshen; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and her sister, Ann Warner. She also leaves the Miller girls and their mother Eileen.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Howard Harry; her siblings, Luke Sabo, Marion Ames and Marguerite Webb; her granddaughter Deana, and her parents Michael and Ruth Sabo.

Arlene will be remembered as a skilled and compassionate nurse, a faithful church member, a devoted wife and mother, and an indispensable part of the Goshen community. Most of all, she will be remembered as the neighborhood mom whose door was always open and whose cookie jar was so often full.

A Service will be held at the Goshen Congregational Church, 45 Main St., Goshen on Friday, August 21, 2026 at 6:00 P.M. pm with desserts following.
